Thus the language spread of English as such is not coincident with its international history. This is important for two reasons. First, the initial period of the expansion of the area in which English was spoken did not take it outside of the British Isles, and so was not so much international as regional. When combined with the fact that this was tied to processes of the internal political and socioeconomic development of the British Isles, and that it was carried out by a large speaker migration over the territory of those islands (O’Riagain, 1997), this period does not take us into the formation of World English as a separate phase of the history of English.
