But again, as a practice profession, is this realistic? Foremost, what is needed most in undergraduate and advanced practice nursing education is to have faculty who are current and competent. I recall very vividly in my own master’s education in the late 1980s how a very talented pathophysiology instructor (with an MSN) was removed from the roster in favor of a faculty member with a doctorate who had very little background or currency in the topic. We literally taught ourselves each week with class presentations.

The PhD in Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh was started in 1954 with a clinical nursing and clinical research emphasis and the DNSc (Doctor of Nursing Science) at Boston University in 1960 with a psychiatric-mental health focus (Grace, 1989; Nichols & Chitty, 2005). Two important distinctions should be made about these two programs, as they both created two distinctive pathways to nursing science knowledge development and shaped doctoral nursing education differently. First, it is the historic inability of the profession to truly develop a widely viewed “clinical doctorate” for the profession as an alternative to the research-intensive PhD that has led to the surge of the DNP degree.

This more than supports earlier data from Loomis, Willard, and Cohen (2006) indicating that 55% of a sample of current DNP students (N ¼ 69) had intentions of pursuing a career in nursing education post graduation.
