While the rest of the army is intent on seizing homes for themselves, Godfrey, Robert of Flanders and Thomas of Marle clean out the Holy Sepulchre and the Temple (142); a cloth they have used miraculously restores sight to a blind man. The Saracen dead are taken out of the city and burned (143), while Corbadas and his company are given free passage out of Jerusalem for surrendering the Tower of David (144). After a week of rejoicing the Bishop of Marturana calls for the election of a king, but, when Godfrey is nominated, he declines (146).

The dove also brings a letter which tells that the rest of the crusading army which had left for France is now on its way back to Jerusalem, and Godfrey and his men ride out at dawn to greet them (213). Crusaders and Saracens agree that the battle between them should take place on the plains of Ramla the following Friday (214). The intervening days are spent in the preparation of arms and in religious procession (215). On the appointed day the crusaders arm themselves (216) and, as each squadron rides out, the Sultan has Peter the Hermit tell him who they are.
