Spanish priests worked in another mission field in present Texas not directly related to those already discussed. In 1682, missionaries fleeing the revolt of the New Mexico pueblos constructed churches in the El Paso area for the converts they brought with them in their retreat. Other missions were established along the Rio Grande, particularly in present-day El Paso and Presidio counties. The missionaries learned to love and appreciate their charges, but purposes of state often overrode their plans.
Additional reactions to French expansion in Louisiana brought renewed mission efforts in 1716 and 1721. Religious and economic reasons also prompted Spanish expansion. The salvation of the aborigine's soul and the support of his overlords who taught and supported him served as important considerations. In the extensions of the kingdom, Spanish officials sent soldiers to act as a safeguard against foreign encroachment and hostile Indians, missionaries to convert the unenlightened, and economic agents to exploit the labor of the local inhabitants.
