The notion of recitation of lessons remained a cornerstone of education for centuries, surviving into the nineteenth century in American universities, where students were called upon to recite portions of the previous day’s lecture. Even today the tutorial sessions, which run in parallel with lectures, are called recitations in some countries. The idea that discussion helps to crystallise learning can trace its roots back at least to the Jesuits, if not to Plato’s academy. Likewise, the view that constant repetition and review of material enhances learning has ancient roots.

Here he draws attention to how energy ebbs and flows, and how people go through different phases in their perspectives on life and hence on learning. He identifies three principal, interacting phases or rhythms of learning. Life is essentially periodic. It comprises daily periods, with their alternations of work and play, of activity and of sleep, and seasonal periods, which dictate our terms and our holidays; and also it is composed of well-marked yearly periods. These are the gross obvious periods which no one can overlook.

Dewey invented the notion of psychologising the subject matter to mean transforming the subject matter into a form that matches the learner (see p. 228). He wrote at one point that the purpose of education is to organise problem-solving and then teach it to students (Dewey, 1933). One consequence of Dewey’s approach is that teaching a topic is not a matter of sorting it out clearly in your own mind and then expounding it to learners, but of making contact with learner experience and interest, and 46 Fundamental constructs in mathematics education devising new experiences that will prompt learners to confront and resolve important and relevant problems.
